Rats in My House
Rats in My House
There is a common misconception that having rats in your home means that it is dirty, however this is not always the case. At this time of year when the weather is colder, rodents make their way in to homes across the UK to escape the cold climate. But what exactly is it that attracts rats in to our homes?
Why are they in my house?
Rats are some of the most common rodents that live amongst us. Most of us at some point in our lives will encounter sightings of rats. Just like us humans, all rats want is a nice warm place to live and a good supply of food. With new properties being built, human activity is disturbing areas where rats would usually live, meaning they are seeking refuge in our homes and gardens.
Most of us will think that all rats are the same, however, there are actually 2 types of rat; The black rat and the brown rat. The most common rat in Great Britain is the brown rat (Rattus Norvegicus). These rodents can usually be found in sewers, gardens and near human habitation.
Why should I get rid of them?
The brown rat will eat just about anything, from insects, fruit, and cereal, to human waste. Rats like to chew to keep their ever-growing teeth at the correct length, which can cause problems for us in our homes, as rats can open up holes in the ground and walls to find a way inside. In some cases, rats have even chewed through electrical wiring, resulting in house fires.
Not only do these rodents cause damage in and around our properties, they are also a very well-known carrier of diseases, the most common of these diseases being salmonella, trichinosis and Weil’s disease.
The more rats there are, the higher the risk of danger that they present. Rats breed very quickly when they are in favourable conditions, such as inside your home. They become sexually mature from just 10-12 weeks old and can have 7-8 babies per litter up to 6 times per year.
